Would you be able to answer a random question on the spot in front of 600 strangers?

On Saturday, August 26, teacher JoAnn Marty, along with five other members of her family, had the chance to try out for the television series, Family Feud. The show only allows five contestants, so the producers will choose the players from the tape.

The five person team included JoAnn Marty, her sister Amy, her daughter Erin, her sons Joseph and Nick  and her son-in-law Jordan, while her husband, Mike, watched and was the personal photographer.

JoAnn Marty was impressed with everyone on her team, but said certain ones stood out.

“Joseph had a wonderful presence about him,” JoAnn Marty said, “and the producer said Jordan had a high likeability factor in the second round.”

If anyone knows JoAnn Marty, it was no surprise that she was determined to win.

The family prepared by going over a list of questions they were provided prior to Saturday. They even sat down as a family to review.

While the family enjoyed trying out for the show, the experience did come with one big hiccup.

The Marty family had a rough start in the first round when they were asked the question, ‘What is a food that comes in slices?’  

When JoAnn Marty rang the buzzer, she immediately blurted out the word “Chicken!”

Huh? “Chicken”… Really?

Obviously, the question was then passed on to the other team.

“It was hilarious,” Erin Marty said. “She could’ve said so many other things like cake, pie, pizza, or oranges. But of all things, she says ‘chicken’.

At the end of the question, they would get into a group huddle to somewhat evaluate how they had just did and in what ways they could possibly improve. The group huddle that occurred after the first round was of course full of many laughs and jokes, but they obviously forgave her for the silly in-the-moment answer.

“I made a fool of myself! Needless to say, we lost that round. It was an honest, sincere, deer-in-a-headlight moment,” Marty said. “It was kind of embarrassing, but, hey,  I’m sure that’s what got us onto the second round,”

The family did receive great news on Sunday–they moved on in the selection process. They met with a producer who filmed personal interviews with each of them and they had to show their excitement and energy. The family must now wait at least a month to know their fate.

“I doubt Steve Harvey will call for us to head to LA, but hey, we’ve got a great story,” Marty said.
