The Windsor girl’s basketball team is ready for a new season.

After winning just four games a season ago, the Owls are hoping to see improvement this season. Coach Kim Schmidt spoke about how she plans to have her team improve from last year.

“Last year, there were a lot of times we got stuck watching one person and expecting them to do something  rather than having five people working on the court and being successful with those five people,” Schmidt said.

Calli Robertson was a key player on the team last season, but losing her to graduation might help this team.

“Calli was someone who would look to score first, that was just her mentality, and I think there may even be some benefit from the fact that now everyone is going to have to do something,  and everyone is going to be in a position to be able to make a play,” Schmidt said.

The Owls will rely on its’ depth this season–the team has 12 girls on the varsity roster. Seniors Camryn Clark, Megan Boyd, Madison New and Brogan Eyre will help lead the way, while juniors Madi Miller, Keri Voegtle, Ally Brickner, Madison Lynch, McKenna Brown, Kaitlin Lewis, Mary Creed and Taylor Jansen will also see some action.

“The twelve girls we have on this team this year allows us to have a lot of options, and it also allows us to work through tough situations like having players in foul trouble,” Schmidt said.

Junior McKenna Brown said that the team would be “putting the majority of their effort into focusing on defense.” The Owls never held an opponent under 40 points last season, so defense should be a focus for the team.

With every new group of players joining and leaving, there are always differences in the areas of strength of the given players.

Senior Megan Boyd spoke about what the girls perceive as their strength this year.

“Speed I would say is our biggest strength. We have a lot of juniors this year who have some speed and our seniors can get the ball to drop really well,” Boyd said.

The Owls will play their first contest at 7 pm on Monday, November 20 at Herculaneum.
