These past few weeks haven’t exactly been the best golfing weather to begin spring practice. Despite the harsh conditions, the Windsor golf team is ready to begin its season.  Coach Wayne Montgomery has been preparing the team for the season. The team practices at Oak Valley Golf Course in Pevely.

Montgomery said, “If we can improve on our putting and chipping, we can have a solid season.  We need to be more focused on accuracy instead of how far we can hit the ball.”

The golf team will compete in five separate tournaments this season. The team returns the majority of their team from last year. The team has ten golfers on the varsity and nine on the junior varsity. The Owls are counting on their top two golfers–Kyle Rudden and Connor Portlock–to lead the way. Rudden was a sectional qualifier last season.

Montgomery said, “The team hopes to be one of the top teams in the conference this year. The team has the possibility for two or three kids to qualify for sectionals this year.”

Portlock said, “My goal for this year is to qualify for state and make it to sectionals. I also have high hopes for an undefeated season.”

The team expects contributions  from the two girls on the team, Sarah Shaul and Emily Smith.

Shaul said, “My goal for the season is to make it to the top of the JV list by the end of the year.”

Emily Smith said, “I’m excited that I made the team and every time I hit the ball straight I always think of my dad’s quote, which is ‘Don’t belittle a shot down the middle.’”

The varsity and junior varsity teams had their first tournament against Ste. Genevieve and St. Pius X rained out on Monday. The team then played against Perryville on Tuesday. The team’s next tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, March 27.
