This season will be unlike any other.

Luckily, the girls basketball team has plenty of experience to help navigate this uncertain season.

After improving to nine wins last season, the Windsor girls basketball team hopes to build off of that improvement.

The team is led by seven seniors–Biz Spurgeon, Bella Spurgeon, Piper Montgomery, Symphony Schodroski, Megan Mueller, Sophie Dubis and Sydney Winkelmann.

This leadership should help the Owls this season.

Montgomery started every game last year for the Owls and was one of the most consistent players on the starting unit. Montgomery averaged 8.2 points per game and led the Owls with over 8 rebounds a game. Her presence on the glass allows the Owls to be confident that the teams that they face will not get a lot of offensive rebounds because she is so physical in the paint.

Schodroski was third on the team with 5.4 points per game and led the team in steals. According to Schmidt, she is the most improved player on the team and is expecting her to have a breakout season.

Biz Spurgeon also played in every game for the Owls and was their fourth best scorer in terms of points per game with 5.1 and was second on the team in rebounds averaging 6.2 per game.  Her effort on the glass is one of the reasons her coaches have so much faith in her. Her defensive presence is also important for the Owls.

Her sister Bella Spurgeon is one of the best defenders on the court. On offense, Bella averaged 3.3 points per game and 1 assist per game. Her grit and determination on defense makes her one of the most impactful players on the team. Bella averages 1.24 steals per game and is a pest on defense.

The Owls also return sophomore Reagan Daly, who led the Owls with 11 points per game and made 48 three-pointers last season.

“I am excited for this group of seniors, some of which this will be their third year at the varsity level,” head coach Kim Schmidt said. “I am looking forward to things clicking this year for them and them being able to use their experience to help their teammates.”

Just like everything in 2020, things can change in a hurry.

Schmidt said, “Things have been different so far this year but we did some workouts this summer and were under similar protocols. Most girls also played a fall sport so they are prepared mentally for these changes… They understand that we can only be in control of certain things and therefore we need to do our best to put ourselves in the best position to be able to play this year.”

With so many seniors, the Owls are hoping for a breakout season.

“I am just excited to get back out there with my teammates and play to the best of my abilities,” senior Piper Montgomery said.
