The 3-2 start to the 2021 football season was the best start for the Owls since the 2006 season. That team finished the season 5-5.

After a tough loss at Hillsboro last week, the Owls are currently 3-3. With new head coach Jeff Funston at the helm, the team’s defense has been much improved this season.

“We have figured out how to get multiple people to the football,” Funston said. “We’re flying to the football with multiple bodies.”

In their three wins, the Windsor defense has allowed 12, 16, and 6 points, respectively.  Their defense has been able to rely on multiple players and they have been able to play team football.

“Our defense has improved quite a bit. We’ve got some heavy hitters,” senior captain Travis Clouse said.

On offense, Junior Nolan Hirth has been able to lead the Owls. Hirth has a 53 percent completion percentage with six touchdowns passes.

Funston said,  “He is figuring out how to get the ball to his playmakers and spread it around…Coming up, he is going to have a lights out game where he is in control of the whole field from snap to whistle The game will slow down to a crawl and he will be as dynamic as anyone who is in our conference this year.”

His main receivers this year have been Conner Begeman and AJ Patrick, who both have two touchdowns on the year and both have over 130 yards each. But Hirth has been able to spread it around as well to other targets as he has connected with five different targets on touchdowns this year.

Hirth has also been able to add a lot to the running game, rushing for 232 yards and one touchdown on 52 carries. But Hirth is not the only guy making an impact in the running game. Jordan Foster has 31 carries for 184 yards and is averaging almost six yards per carry.

“I still feel like I could be playing better,” Foster said.  “I just need to keep playing and keep getting better.”

The Owls play next at 7pm tomorrow at home against the North County Raiders.

“We are locked in on what we need to do for the rest of the season,” Funston said.
