Kevin Stoffey has been coaching wrestling for 24 years.

In all of his years as the head coach, he has never had a state champion. That may change soon.

The wrestling team, one of the most consistent athletic programs at Windsor, regularly has state qualifiers and usually has multiple medalists each year. The Owls had four state qualifiers last season, including one fourth place finish by Jacob Warren.

Stoffey says that Jacob Warren and Ryan Yarnell are right up there with the best wrestlers that he has had at Windsor. However, until they reach the state finals like five others have in the past, he can’t say they are better than those.

He says that, “At this stage in the game, they are as good as or better than anybody I have had.”

Stoffey says Yarnell and Warren are different from wrestlers in the past.

Stoffey said, “Yarnell and Warren’s work ethic is different than most of the wrestlers I have had. They are just on the mat a lot, they wrestle year-round and that it’s all about mat time.”

Warren and Yarnell are not the only wrestlers Stoffey is looking forward to coach this season.

Returning state qualifier Drew Kinder, wrestling at 113 pounds, is hopeful for another trip to state. Kinder has a goal of medaling at state this year. The Owls have several others that could be making a trip to Columbia in February. Andrew Marler, Connor Richey and Jeremy Sandknop are all hopeful for a strong season. 

Yarnell, another returning state qualifier, wrestling a 182 pounds, set the same goal of finally winning state. He says that newcomer Zach Portlock, Isaac Longtin, Robert Best and Logan Pauley are going to have a strong season.

According to Ryan Yarnell, “The team is going to do great.”

The Owls being their season today (December 1) at 6pm against SLUH at home.
