Last year, Sam Mckean, Kevin O’Brien and a handful of other students started a petition during Owl Time asking for students to be allowed to wear hats during school.

Apparently, the administration took notice.

Hats are now allowed at Windsor High School for the 2017-18 school year.

“Every year, the staff looks over all the discipline policies by deciding what disrupts and affects the ability for students to learn, and myself, Dr. Montgomery, and Ms. Thayer decided to have a trial run during summer school to see if students can be responsible enough to wear hats,” principal Jason Naucke said. 

By the end of summer school, it was obvious that the new hat rule did not distract students.

“I like to wear hats during school because it makes my hair look good, just look at the back of my hair,” senior Jacob Smith said.   

Many students think that the administration made the right call on this issue.

Senior Jack Brueggeman said, “Teachers and staff can focus on more important things instead of wasting time on disciplining students with hats because that was a big waste of time.”

Some students that didn’t even try to wear hats previously are now taking advantage of the new policy. Senior Barrett Hulsey has even went out of his way to buy new hats.

Hulsey said, “I thought they were cool, and everyone was wearing one so I decided to go buy a few.”

In the past, students were sometimes allowed to wear hats on Fridays for a $1 fee.

Senior Robert Renner said, “I think (the old policy) was (silly). The hats aren’t bothering anyone.  Even on the days that we had to pay a dollar to wear them, we proved that we are mature enough to wear them.”
