The 2017 Windsor volleyball team is almost literally in the shadow of last year’s team. This year’s Windsor volleyball team is much smaller and younger than the team that went 22-7-1 a year ago. The 2016 squad featured three girls that stood 5-feet-10 inches or taller.

Other than McKenna Brown, who stands at 5-feet-10 inches, the 2017 Owls are a much different team this season. 

Head coach Stephany Dueker said, “With us being much shorter from last year, we are more of a defensive team than an offensive team like we were last year.  That’s not to say that we don’t have an offense–our offense is steadily improving–but lacking height in volleyball is an offensive obstacle.”

The Owls have struggled at times this season and currently have a record of 7-11-2. However, the Owls only have one senior–Maggie Figler–so they have plenty to look forward to in the future.  

Dueker said, “With youth comes inexperience and more mental errors.  However, it also brings a chance to start working with a group of girls earlier than usual which should end with success in the future.”

The Owls have kept a positive outlook this season.

Figler said, “The lack of height on the team means we (struggle offensively) but on the bright side,  are defense is becoming very good.“

While the Owls are still looking to end the season on a high note, they are excited to see what comes in the future.

Junior Mckenna Brown said, “Bringing younger players on the team leaves room for major improvement for upcoming years.”

The Owls next play on Monday (10/2) at Seckman. On Tuesday (10/3), the Owls play their senior night game at 6:30pm at home against Fox.
