On Friday, March 2, Windsor and Seckman came together for a “March For Hunger.”
The two school rivals first came together last year and now plan on making it an annual event.
During the march, Windsor and Seckman students collected cans and other non perishable items to try to make a difference for the children and families who can’t afford to buy food. Two members from the Army, staff sergeant Joshua L Brown and staff sergeant 1st class Steven Dudak, not only helped the students with the can pick up, but also supplied them with a trailer and truck to hold all of the items. They also brought along a special friend, a small Dachshund dressed up in an army suit that goes by the name of Vern. The dog brought smiles to everyone’s faces.
Senior Madi New said, “It really brings [the community] together in a time when people seem to argue about everything. It’s nice to see people working together to help others.”
To begin the march, Windsor students collected and loaded cans from Windsor High School. Then, they went down to the middle school, followed by the intermediate. Finally, Windsor marched to the elementary and collected more cans. Before they left, they said goodbye with a fun song and dance to show thanks.
A bus then took the students from Windsor Elementary to Mastodon State Park to meet up with the Seckman students and staff helping with the march. From there, Seckman and Windsor together both marched two miles all the way down Seckman Road picking up cans from the top of every single street.
Student council members made sure to keep the marchers pumped up by singing songs and doing silly dances to keep spirits high. No one could complain because the weather was perfect and the entire crowd kept high spirits.
As they reached Seckman Middle School, everyone’s eyes were focused on the amount of cans that were collected by the middle school. There were so many cans that they filled up the truck and the trailer and had to start filling up a school bus. The students pumped up the crowd dancing to the Cupid Shuffle before leaving.
The schools moved to Seckman High School to finish the day. Everyone worked together making assembly lines and taking charge in the bus to fill up an entire bus.
A few hand-selected students from each school were chosen to head over to the food pantry and unload the bus themselves
Seckman student Kaitlyn Sheppard said, “My favorite part about today was everyone singing the songs and the amount of food Seckman Middle School collected.”
Windsor junior MacKenzie Laplant said, “It was cool to partner with Seckman. I feel like we could have gotten more cans with more time and advertising, but the experience was amazing and I hope more people participate next year.
Windsor teacher JoAnn Marty said, “We started this off as a way to give food to our local food pantry, but it grew into something much bigger. We have two schools coming together to build relationships and work toward common good.”
