For some reason, three-sport athletes are hard to find these days.
But for junior Keri Voegtle, three sports aren’t enough.
In the fall, she leads the cross country team. Over the winter, she spends her time hustling up and down a basketball court. During the spring, she can be seen sprinting on the track and playing soccer.
For Voegtle, soccer has always been her No. 1 love. She fell in love with soccer when she was in kindergarten. She hopes to play in college and maybe even get a scholarship for her skills. Voegtle is one of the captains for both her club team and for the Lady Owls Varsity soccer team. While soccer is her main love, she also enjoys running. When head track coach Stephany Dueker approached Voegtle, it quickly became clear that Voegtle could also help out the track team.
Head girls soccer coach Mike Hutchison said, “I totally support Voegtle running track at the same time she is playing soccer. She’s a great athlete and should be allowed to challenge herself in multiple sports. She will not miss a soccer practice or game, so there should be no negative effect on soccer.”
Voegle’s family has also been very supportive of her.
Keri Voegtle’s mom, Donna Voegtle, said, “I support Keri in whatever she wants to do. I enjoy watching her compete and grow as an athlete and a person.”
Keri Voegtle ran track in middle school. She always knew she was fast and won many events in her middle school career. While she hadn’t competed in track in three years, she agreed to compete in a few track meets as long as it didn’t affect soccer.
When Dueker initially asked Voegtle to run in a couple of meets, she was skeptical about it at first, but after she thought about it, she realized this was a good opportunity for her to help out all of her friends on the track team. At Voegtle’s first track meet this year at Herculaneum, she won two relays–the 4×400 and the 4×200.
Dueker said, “I’m very thankful Voegtle is able to compete in a couple of meets with us while she plays soccer as well. She is a very talented girl. I wish the track team got to use her more often.”
The end of the season schedule should allow Voegtle to compete for both teams in the postseason.
Not only is she juggling these sports, she also participates in other extra curricular activities such as National Honors Society and the Spanish Club. She also has a job. While Voegetle is constantly busy, she doesn’t seem to slow down. One of Voegtle’s most impressive achievements is her school attendance–she hasn’t missed a day of school since third grade.
Voegtle said, “I feel overwhelmed all the time but I try not to stress about it and keep moving on.”
