With big numbers and zero seniors, the Windsor tennis team looks towards young talent to lead the team this season and beyond. 

The team has 27 players this year. Without a senior to take the lead, junior Bailey Anderson has been named captain.  

Her responsibilities go beyond just her performance–as a matter of fact, she almost acts as an “assistant coach” for the team. With so many girls on the team and no assistants, head coach Doc Carranza leans on his veteran players to help out the younger athletes.

Anderson said, “Being captain adds a lot of responsibility, like helping the younger players who don’t really know what they’re doing.”

Although Anderson has the title of captain, the leadership roles of being a captain are also spread out between top returners, Kenzie Sowa and Kenzie Lamkins.

Carranza said, “I kind of split the responsibilities between the three of them, giving each of them parts of it. All three of them could make one person.”

This young team, although talented, has to adjust to their new district with some tougher competition.

Carranza said, “Last year we were in a district that went south, with teams like Pius and Potosi. Now we’re going north, with teams like Lutheran South and Clayton. So we’re pretty much the only public school in our district.”

The team overall feels confident in themselves and look forward to growing as a young team.

“We are a young team, but I’m confident and know we can compete,” Carranza said.

The Owls next match is at 4pm on Monday at Arcadia Valley.
