With the new fall season in full swing, there are a couple of guarantees–packed stands at the football games and majestic dingers from senior softball player, Jessica Veselske.

She came into her senior year with 15 career home runs and an overall career batting average that stands at around .500. She has already gotten off to a hot start in the team’s few games so far this year as well posting an average of .600 with three home runs. Her play has earned her The Hoot August Athlete of the Month.

Some extra excitement has been generated around her recent commitment to play softball at Jefferson College once she leaves the friendly halls of Windsor. But even with the excitement that the future holds, Veselske is locked in on having a successful senior season.

Veselske said, “I definitely have my goals set higher than I have in the past knowing it’s my last ride.”

Even with the impressive numbers, great players always seem to be able to impact the game in other ways that may not be able to be understood by the casual fan.

Beyond the statistics, a player like Veselske definitely has a presence that other players acknowledge and admire in the dugout.

Junior Delana Mentel said, “Jessi is a great leader and someone I can always learn from.”

As important as Veselske is to the success of the group, they have a number of players who are expected to make major contributions to what looks to be like another very successful fall season.

Senior Bella Marco said, “I think both Jessi (Veselske) and Piper (Montgomery) make big contributions both offensively and defensively. But you also have to think about Peyton Irwin at shortstop with her speed, and Jayden Treis and Emma Po have been huge for us, too.”

The team kicked off their fall campaign by taking three of their first four games in the Sullivan tournament, and they seem to have built some momentum since the tournament as well. The girls are coming off an absolute plundering with a 27-0 blowout win over the Bayless Brochos.

The Owls hit parade consisted of 21 total hits from the girls, and pitchers Jessica Veselske and Delana Mentel did not allow a single batter to reach base in the three inning game. The pitchers sent eight of the nine batters faced back to the dugout with a strikeout.

With these kind of performances, the Windsor Owls softball team was recently ranked in the top 10 small schools in the St. Louis area by STLhighschoolsports.com.

Their next opponent is at 4:30pm on Monday at St. Pius X.

Marco said, “If we work hard and play solid ball, we will go a long way and end up with a lot of wins.”
