Hoping For History
The soccer team is looking to bring another district title to Windsor.
October 9, 2018
The boys varsity soccer team brought home a district title in 2017, which was only the second title in school history. The first was back in 2013. This victory has been fueling the boys to win the championship again, and if they do, they will become the first team in WIndsor soccer history to win back-to-back district titles.
Head coach Chris Krueger said, “I believe they have a shot at achieving anything they all put their minds to. They have shown a grit to them that they won’t back down from any team this year. I believe that shows in their record, but also the fact that they have played in four overtimes games already this season.”
The boys are currently 9-6-1 this season.
Anton Sokolic, one of the midfielders on the team, noted how the group needed to work on scoring more goals, rather than being defense orientated like they have been this season. He is also optimistic about the upcoming district tournament.
“We have the same district we had last year and that’s kind of cool, play them again, and have the rivalry back together,” Sokolic said.
Krueger has been emphasizing endurance this season. He also mentioned how the team needs to respond in physical games.
“When our minds aren’t right, then our physical play deteriorates along with it,” Krueger said. “When we can’t stay focus on the bigger picture, winning the game, then it becomes an individual game about what happened to me or I have to get my evens. Staying both mentally and physically focused leads to success.”
As a forward, Grant Siegel, leads the team with 23 points. He is second on the team with 9 goals. Siegel talked about the team dynamic and how positive the group is for one another.
Siegel said, “I feel like we are very well balanced. We have a very strong middle as well as a very strong outside. We possess the ball really well and we move it up the field as a unit.”
Later this month, the team will compete for another district title.
“It’s incredible when everyone is truly trying to achieve the same goal, that the sacrifice each individual will do for the betterment of the team,” Krueger said.
