The Windsor football season couldn’t have started much better. After defeating St. Pius X 28-6 in week one, the Owls won a 20-19 thriller over Seckman.

At the time, the Owls were being led by quarterback Derek Williams, who ran for over 200 yards in each of those two games. During week three, the Owls lost 29-20 to DeSoto despite missing Williams for much of the first half after suffering a minor chest injury. Then, came the unexpected homecoming game against Park Hills Central. In the third quarter, Williams suffered a season ending leg injury.

Derek Williams came out of the gates firing on all cylinders and still leads our team in most offensive statistical categories even though his season was cut short mid-game Week 4,” head coach Alex DeMatteis said.

Williams had 67 carries for 583 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 8.7 yards per carry in four weeks.  Williams was 27 for 47 passing (57% completion) for 318 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Williams isn’t the only injury the Owls have had to overcome, especially in the backfield. Running backs Justin Stenger, Johnny Fasanello and Chris Butts have missed time due to injuries.

Despite the injuries, the Owls have remained competitive.

Dealing with all of the injuries, especially season ending injuries, has been quite challenging for us this year.  With that being said, I couldn’t be happier with how our players have responded to these challenges. We have had to ask players to take on new roles throughout the season, sometimes drastically different roles.  Each and every one of them accepted those roles with open arms and have strived to perform to the best of their abilities. I’m proud of our team for always choosing to find a way regardless of the circumstances.”

Even with the injuries, the Owls nearly knocked off conference champion Hillsboro during week 5. Senior Kalen Gmerek has filled in for Williams at the quarterback position. He has ran for nearly 400 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior Austin Henry also had to make a position switch this season.

DeMatteis said, Austin Henry made the biggest transition position wise as he moved from right tackle to running back.  After being an offensive lineman for 16 consecutive starts dating back to last year.”

Henry has 43 carries for 355 yards and 3 touchdowns in the last three games.  That is an average of 8.3 yards per carry. Henry has been very productive in his new role while being a staple on defense.  Henry is second on the team in total tackles as an outside linebacker with 52.

Last Friday, the Owls snapped their losing streak with a 48-0 win over Bayless. The Owls hope to take that positive momentum into districts tonight. The Owls will play at 7 pm tonight at  No. 1 seeded Farmington.

DeMatteis said, “We do a great job refocusing on our next opponent following a victory.  We turn the page on Monday after a win the previous Friday and get ready for next week’s opponent.”
