For the 2023 season, the Windsor softball team will rely heavily on its seniors.
The seniors include: Riley Fendler, Madison Williams, Kylie Alaniz, Hailey Svoboda, Lindsey Pollard and Logan Veselske.
The Owls finished second in their first tournament of the season at Sullivan.
“Starting off the season, we did really well and we won our first two games,” Veselske said.
While the Owls will lean on their seniors, they do have several other capable players that will step up at times.
“Sammy Wilson and Natalie Krause are stepping up and going to make a big difference,” Veselske said.
Wilson drove in three runs and had a multi-hit game in a recent win over Perryville.
Head coach Wayne Montgomery said, “Overall we’ve been doing pretty good but we can always get better.”
Last year, the Owls finished 16-12. From the pitcher’s circle, Fendler won 15 games last season and compiled a 2.58 earned run average. From the plate, she also led the team with 37 runs batted in. Veleslke had the highest batting average of any returner at .425.
For this season, Alaniz is batting .300 and Williams is hitting .375.
After their second place finish last weekend, Fendler and Veselske were selected to the all tournament team.
Montgomery said that Fendler might be even better this season.
“She started out the season with 3 wins this year,” Montgomery said. “She’s throwing harder than she has these past years and she’s doing good with her locations and speed.”
For the season, the Owls are currently 3-2. Their next game is at Jefferson R-7 on Tuesday.
“I think we will play well and have a good game against R-7,” Veselske said.
