The softball season is over, but some school records might last a while.
Senior Riley Fendler capped off her final season by breaking the Windsor single season home run record. Fendler hit 12 home runs this year, surpassing the previous record of 9 set by Riley Siegel in 2020. Fendler also has the most career wins as a pitcher with 54 and career strikeouts with 369.
Fendler said, “That I have achieved a goal for being in softball for 8 years, just that I have achieved a big goal in life and it is always something you want to do”.
Head coach Wayne Montgomery has watched Fendler improve over the past four years.
“I think it’s pretty neat, pretty impressive that she was able to put that together. She came from being our leadoff hitter freshman year to being out power hitter her senior year. She put up some impressive numbers, so it was nice to see that she beat it. She beat it by three home runs which is pretty good,” Montgomery said.
According to Montgomery, Siegel and Fendler both had impressive seasons.
“They both had exceptional years, I mean it’s pretty good. When Seigel hit 9 we only played 25 games. We didn’t play as many games but Fendler actually broke the record in less games, so I think that did help Fendler a little bit. They are both power hitters and stuff. They both had good quality seasons. They were both smart hitters at the plate.”
Fendler wasn’t the only player breaking records this fall. Logan Veselske set the single season doubles record with 18.
The Owls finished this season at 18-14. Earlier this week, three players were named first team all conference: Riley Fendler, Madison Williams and Veselske. Fendler was also named the conference co-player of the year. Samantha Wilson and Ty Schenck were named to the second team. Kylie Alaniz and Sophia Stemmler were named honorable mention all conference.
The Owls season ended in a 12-8 loss against Rockwood Summit.
Montgomery said, “I think we had a good season. We had a winning record. We won 18 games and we did well there. We competed for the conference championship. We kind of fell short a little bit but we did finish second in conference, which is kind of where we’ve been the last couple years. We beat some good teams this year: Cape Notre Dame, Cor Jesu, Pacific. We had some good quality wins, just unfortunately fell short in districts.”
