What shows school spirit more than senior boys covered in shiny gold paint?
For the past several years, it’s been tradition for a group of Windsor boys to paint their bodies gold every home football game. When the Friday night lights turn on and the football team prepares themselves for the big game, the golden boys lather themselves in shiny golden paint. These designated hype men spend the evening doing anything to get the crowd into the game, such as running the length of the field while waving a big flag everytime the Owls score a touchdown.
This year, the honor was passed down to Seniors Brenton Shirk, Zach Wurm, and Max Steighorst. These boys have been looking forward to taking on this job since their freshman year.
“Watching the seniors every year, I wanted to be the one out in front of the crowd running around like they did, it looked like fun,” said Wurm.
The main goal of these boys is to bring enthusiasm to the crowd and have a good time doing it. Growing up, this year’s seniors saw past golden boys and looked up to them, admiring their energy and how much fun they seemed to have.
Shirk said, “I’ve been looking forward to doing it for years, it’s a really cool experience to be a part of.”
Not only do the golden boys amp up the crowd, but they help the players too.
“Looking over and seeing how excited the crowd gets because of the golden boys helps me play better,” said senior captain Nick Baer.
With the 2023 football season coming to an end , these seniors’ careers as golden boys are coming to an end as well. Senior year is always short and bittersweet, but the boys all agreed the memories that they made will last a long time. One of the most memorable experiences happened during the second game of the season. The golden boys convinced Hootie, the school’s mascot, to participate in the flag run with them after touchdowns. The mascot tried his best to run but began losing his head. Alex DeMattias, the assistant principal, and the golden boys had to help catch it before he revealed his identity!
Although they won’t get a senior banner or win any awards for their efforts, the football season wouldn’t be the same without them.
“Making the crowd cheer, Brenton’s handstands, and running the field after touchdowns will be something I will always remember,” said Steighorst.
