Earlier this month, the Windsor girls wrestling team won their first JCAA conference championship.
Interest in the girls program has gone up significantly over the past year. Last year, the team only had five girls and they now have 13 girls on the team.
“A majority of the team is brand new to the sport of wrestling. I want to see them succeed and progress throughout the season,” head girls coach Ryan Nuspl said.
At the conference meet, Delaney Rapp, Sydney Streckfuss, Reese Ronzio and Ashley Hanson brought home individual conference championships.
Rapp said, “I am so proud of my team… We go to practice and get it done.”
On the boys side, the team is also having a standout season. At the conference meet, the boys finished in second place.
On the season, the team still has one undefeated wrestler–junior Brice Henry at 32-0.
Henry said, “It feels great considering last year I lost one of the first matches of the year so I didn’t get to see what that was like.”
The Owls coach is happy to have Henry on his side.
Boys head coach Jacob Gegg said, “It’s nice to have a guy that dominates each match and expects to win every time he steps on the mat. The end goal for him this season is to win a state title, regardless of his record. To be ready for the state tournament, we need to see tough competition. If he keeps his perfect record along the way, then it’s just icing on the cake.”
At the JCAA conference tournament, the Owls finished second to Hillsboro, a team that won state last year.
“Our conference is tough and getting better. Our county as a whole is getting better at wrestling, and that shows at the end of the year when the number of state medalists from our area has increased over the last few years. Ideally we should walk away from the tournament with a handful of champions and a majority of our team finishing in the top 2 of each bracket,” Gegg said.
The Owls have a few weeks left in their season. The girls state tournament will take place February 21-22 in Columbia and the girls state tournament will take place February 23-24.
