Construction throughout the Windsor C-1 School District is a sign of progress for the district.
With the passing of a $20 million bond issue in 2022, the school is finally making improvements at several locations. The school is building a new gymnasium at the intermediate center, a new band room at the high school, a new weight room at the high school, and several other smaller ticket items. The Intermediate Center (IC), which is also adding six new classrooms, should see the finished product early next semester.
Superintendent Jason King said, “You’re going to see substantial completion of the IC portion of our projects in January of 2025…There will be a six classroom addition connecting the new gym to the I.C.”
The playground at the IC will undergo some changes as well. The dirt “kickball” field attached to the playground will soon have turf installed. Keeping the dirt field maintained in a condition perfect enough for the kids to play on has been a struggle. It either rains too much, or grass is too long so finding an in between has been hard. The playground at both elementary schools should be getting some upgrades soon.
“We are in the design phase for some upgrades to the playgrounds at Freer and Windsor Elementary,” King said.
At the high school, not only will there be a new band and weight room, the family and consumer science room has been renovated. The room is awaiting final touches with all of the appliances being installed and water turned on.
Teacher Casey Willenbrock said, “(When it’s completed), I will be elated. Can’t wait to share it with my kids.”
The high school roof has also been fixed in several locations.
The weight room will also serve as a storm shelter. There will also be five new tennis courts behind the baseball field. King specifically mentioned the new weight room as something students and staff can look forward to in the near future. The project is expected to be completed by April of 2025.
King said, “(There will be) fantastic, state of the art equipment. It will be (equipment) Windsor has never had.”
Strength and conditioning coach Ty Van Valkenburg has been involved in the planning process for the new weight room,
Van Valkenburg said, “The new weight room will have 35 yards x 10 yards of indoor turf, 14 racks, new dumbbells, glute ham raises, plyometric boxes, air resistance bikes, and several other specialty pieces of equipment.”
“I can’t wait to share this amazing facility with all of the student-athletes past and present who’s hard work and commitment to WHS Strength & Conditioning have helped make this a reality,” Van Valkenburg said. “I expect the future generations of student-athletes that are fortunate to train in this new state of the art facility take pride in the work they put in so they honor the legacy of all who have come before.”
The indoor turf should be a big hit for those taking advantage of the new complex.
Sophomore Ty Schneck said, “Having enough turf on the inside so we don’t have to go outside when it’s too hot or too cold (will be nice).”
While King said that “$20 million, while it’s an awful lot of money, only goes so far,” the district is always trying to improve the Windsor C-1 School District.
King said, “There is a lot going on and those opportunities are about to get better with the projects that we have taking place.”
