In an exciting new chapter for both the varsity basketball program and the art department, Brian Gilbert has officially taken on dual roles at Windsor High as a head varsity basketball coach and art teacher. This marks his second year coaching the basketball team as the head varsity coach and his first year stepping into the classroom at the high school level.
Gilbert, who previously coached at the junior varsity level and taught at Windsor Middle School, has created a reputation for his dynamic coaching style and his ability to connect with players.
“Developing a personal relationship and investing in students is crucial for my teaching and coaching. That way, when challenges and adversity strikes, we are on the same page and common ground is much more manageable to accomplish,” Gilbert said.
Under his guidance, the team finished 19-8 last season. This year, expectations are high as Gilbert aims to build on last year’s momentum and lead the team to new heights.
“I like where we are at from that standpoint and the boys who were bought in put a lot of work in during the offseason.” Gilbert said. “Nothing grows in the comfort zone and life gives you opportunities to step up, you’ve got to own it. Failure is a part of the game, but as long as you have great attitude and effort and are getting better everyday, as a coach, you can’t complain.”
In addition to his coaching duties, Gilbert is also stepping into the role of art teacher, where he hopes to inspire students to express themselves creatively. His background as a middle school art teacher gives him a respectful background that he plans to bring to the classroom.
“High schooler’s are a different breed than middle schooler’s and the biggest change for me is being transparent with my students. Explaining the why and keeping students involved in the process, not just barking orders. I have really enjoyed the maturity and standards top down at the high school,” said Gilbert.
Gilbert’s transition to high school comes as part of a broader initiative to strengthen the connections between athletics and academics.
“I am very fortunate to have great kids who are student athletes. They all understand that basketball is a privilege, not a right, and handling your business in the classroom is your first job,” Gilbert said.
As the basketball season approaches, Gilbert is prepared to build connections to stay connected with his players and students. He also strives to develop a new legacy on the varsity side.
“As a second year varsity coach it’s tough to think about legacy at this point, but having been in the program for 12 years, I would like to think that I have been the same coach on every level. Invested in my players and willing to go to war with them day in and day out. Preparing them for challenges and adversity that life brings through the game of basketball,” Gilbert said.
