With each game, Sara Weiberg’s confidence on the court continues to soar, thanks to the environment created by her teammates and head coach Kim Schmidt. The standout player has consistently pushed herself to step outside her comfort zone, and it’s paying off.
“I’m really grateful for my teammates cheering me on, and my coaches giving me support to go outside my comfort zone,” said Weiberg. “It’s made a huge difference in my game, and I feel like I’ve grown a lot because of it.”
Head coach Kim Schmidt has high expectations for her 2024-25 team. Last year, the Owls finished the season 11-11. While the team did graduate its top two scorers, it does return Wieberg (8.2 points per game) and sophomore Brooklyn Johnson (6 points per game). Wieberg, who was an all-conference selection last season, should be the team’s leader on and off the court.
“We expect Sara Wieberg, Brooklyn Johnson and Ella Montgomery to help carry the (offensive) load for us this year,” Schmidt said.
In the first game of the season, the Owls knocked off Herculaneum 45-28. Johnson led the Owls with 12 points, while Wieberg and Montgomery each scored 11.
Avari LaPlant, Averi Davis, Haley Rose, Shea Mancuso, Arianna Eslamian, and Paige Lorella should also see significant playing time this season.
With a young team, growth is in mind for this team. Creating confidence for the whole team to match Weiberg’s will make a team to look out for.
As the season progresses, it’s clear that Sara Weiberg’s growth, fueled by the support of her teammates and the guidance of Coach Schmidt, will be a key factor in the team’s continued success.
Weiberg’s confidence helps her lead and set an example for the rest of the team. The future looks bright for Weiberg and the team as they continue to build on their success this season.
The Owls begin play in the Southside Classic at 8pm today at Mehlville against Oakville.
Schmidt said, “I am excited to see how some of the younger players step into roles this year and step up to the challenge.”
