After beating Perryville 98-87 on Friday, the boys basketball team claimed the JCAA conference championship.
“Winning Conference is our number one goal each and every season. So it is a very big deal to our team and entire program. Windsor has not won a solo conference in 20 years. We are in a tough conference and bragging rights are earned not given,” Gilbert said.
Against the Pirates, junior Owen Haegele scored 46 points. His late season surge, along with senior Layton Hollis, helped lead the Owls to the conference crown.
This year’s basketball team has had several surprises.
“What has surprised me most about our team is our balanced approach and commitment to our brand of basketball. We play tough man defense and frustrate teams with our physicality and tenacious defensive mindset. We turn great defense into easy offense and when we do slow it down we have really shared the ball well. We have five players who are averaging around 10 points. When you share the ball and defenses can’t key in on just one guy it makes it really hard for opposing defenses to get stops,” Gilbert said.
Unfortunately, the boys district is less than ideal. The Owls were given the No. 6 seed and will take on No. 3 seed St. Mary’s. They will begin play on Wednesday at 5pm at Vianney against St. Mary’s.
“Well, it is a very tough district and as a (19-6) six seed, that is less than ideal. But we can only control what we can control and we are excited for the match up vs a very high powered offense like St. Marys. They have one of the highest scoring offenses in the STL area and are led by Zyree Collins who is averaging (32.2) a game. So holding them in check will be difficult, but our guys have been up to the challenge all year long and we are going to give them our best look,” Gilbert said
