The Owls showed resilience and determination after a tough start on their first day of the regular season, bouncing back with a dominant performance on day two.
After opening the year against several powerhouse teams, the Owls dropped their first two games—losing to Father Tolton Catholic and Liberty, both by a score of 8-3. But on Saturday, the team went 3-0, defeating Linn 7-0 and Blair Oaks 10-4. Both of those teams reached the Final Four last season. The Owls also notched a win over Webster Groves.
“We knew we had to bounce back and prove ourselves,” said junior Ty Schenck. “Everyone contributed, and it was a total team effort.”
The Owls brought energy throughout the day, backed by solid pitching from junior Anna Holland and sophomore Ella Montgomery. Both pitchers put in strong performances on the mound, while the offense delivered key hits at the plate, proving the team could compete with some of the area’s top programs.
“Everyone does their job in the infield and outfield, and they know what job needs to be done. That is their main priority while out there,” said head coach Wayne Montgomery.
Sophomore Aubree Palmer credited Schenck’s leadership in the outfield.
“In the outfield, (Ty) Schenck controls it and keeps everyone up and motivated,” said Palmer. “She is the leader when it comes to being in the outfield.”
The infield also played a major role in the team’s success. Senior Natalie Krause anchored the defense and brought vocal leadership to the field.
“Natalie is very talkative and has made a lot of great plays leading up to our wins this weekend,” Palmer added.
Offensively, the Owls had several players step up in key moments. Gracie Willtrout and Anna Holland were named to the All-Tournament Team. Willtrout recorded nine hits over the weekend, helping the Owls move runners and score. Schenck also contributed with a home run.
“Natalie Krause had amazing plays at shortstop along with great communication to help get some throwdowns,” said Montgomery.
Despite early losses to Tolton Catholic and Liberty, the team used those games as learning experiences and didn’t let them define their tournament.
“This weekend was a turning point for us, and if we keep playing like this, I believe we can reach our goal of a winning record this season,” said senior Natalie Krause.
