Staff Report

The 2016-17 winter sports season officially began on Monday, October 31.

Wrestling

The wrestling team is coming off a strong 2015-16 season. The team had 4 state qualifiers last season. The team returns state qualifiers Jacob Warren, Ryan Yarnell and Drew Kinder.  Warren finished the season with a fourth place finish at the state tournament. The Owls are hopeful that they can bring even more wrestlers to state this season.

Head coach Kevin Stoffey said, “We have a several guys that I expect big things from. Drew Kinder qualified for state last year and I expect him to qualify again. Ryan Yarnell and Jake Warren are both top notch and the sky is the limit for those two–they could win it all–and I expect them to medal. I expect other guys to step up. There have been other guys that have been real close and could make it to the big show (State). Andrew Marler shows a lot of progress, Connor Richey, (Christian) Homier, Isaac Longtin, Jeremy Sandknop. We have a dozen guys that are capable of making state and being competitive. So, it should be a good year. It’s going to be the best year in recent memory, so I’m very much looking forward to it.”

The Owls begin their season on December 1 at home against St. Louis University High.

Boys Basketball

The boys basketball team is coming off its’ first winning season in a decade. The Owls finished 17-10 and made it to the second round of districts. However, the team must replace graduated seniors Logan Kelley-Wolff and Trey Miller. Those two led the team in scoring last season.

Head coach Todd Dutton said, “My expectations for this season are high. We have a lot of guys back from last year. Yes, we have some big roles to fill, but with what we have coming back and with a couple guys we have coming out (trying out), we can make it a goal to do as well as last year or better.”

The boys begin their season on November 28 in the Southside Classic.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team is coming off an 11-14 season. The Owls graduated several key seniors, including leading scorers Hannah Holloway and Anna Haley. However, the Owls return seniors Shania Kmetz and Calli Robertson. Kmetz made 19 three pointers last season, while Robertson had 38 steals. Macey Hirth and Abby Halloway should also play key roles for the team this season.

Head coach Kim Schmidt said, “Well, I’m excited for the season to start. I think that we have a lot of opportunities for some people to step up and fill a lot of big shoes that were missing from last year, so it gives people some new roles to play this year.”

The girls begin their season on November 21 at home against Herculaneum.
