Social media is taking over the world. But is it a good thing?

It is causing problems in society. While you may think social media creates better communication, it in fact creates even more problems. There is a huge lack of communication in the world. Every year there are new inventions that add to the social media impact in the world.

Many high school kids are the most affected by the social media world. This has a profound effect on high school kids who are trying to get a job. Many teenagers struggle in job interviews because they are only used to communicating online. Almost everyone relies on social media or the Internet to find out information. Getting news from actual credible newspapers seems to be a thing of the past–especially for the younger generation.

There is very little communication in the school halls as well, due to everyone having their faces staring at a screen all day. Very few are concerned with making any effort to simply say “hello”, or “how are you”? Now, we can just send a simple text in like five seconds. In my opinion, generations to come will suffer greatly to the point nobody will understand the concept of communication.

Business teacher Sue Navratil said, “I dislike social media…I am more of a people person and communicate face to face.”

Young people are constantly sending instant texts, tweeting or posting what’s on their mind. Social media is increasing forms of cyberbullying as well. For example, people can easily post embarrassing pictures of someone, tag them in an inappropriate photo or even make comments about people.

However, there are some pros about social media as well. For example, keeping in touch with long distance relatives or old friends who have moved away.

Junior Madison New said, “It is a good way to stay connected with long distance relatives who live in another state.”

Another pro to social media is broadcasting information to citizens, such as weather or tragic events that could possibly affect others. However, due to the instant information, accuracy is sometimes a problem.

Newspaper adviser Jeff Stoffey said, “News is now everywhere. However, with the instantaneous information comes an accuracy problem. Too many people are worried about breaking the news first rather than reporting the news accurately.”  

Social media can even broadcast sports and other entertainment information that citizens want to know about.

How will social media transform the world within the next few years? In my opinion,  social media is transforming our world in more negative ways than positive.
