On Friday night, Nolan Hirth was leading the Owls to an opening week night victory as the team’s new starting quarterback.

By Saturday morning, he was helping the volleyball team mop the floor.

Literally.

While the volleyball team did end up winning their own tournament on Saturday, Hirth helped keep the floor playable for the team. During the tournament, water leaked from the ceiling. So, Hirth stepped up and mopped the floor after almost every play.

Volleyball coach Stephany Dueker-Richmond said, “The varsity team is very grateful to Nolan for helping with the floor issue at our tournament. Without his help, we would have had to wait until the other gym was done to play the championship.”

Hirth took over the starting quarterback role from Derek Williams, who was the conference MVP last season. In his first game as the starter, Hirth led the Owls to a 15-12 win over Herculaneum. He completed nine passes, one for a touchdown, and also rushed for 48 yards on the night.

Hirth said, “It’s no big deal, I mean Derek was great…It’s just something that needs to be done and I feel like I am the right guy to do it.”

Head coach Jeff Funston was pleased with his new quarterback.

Funston said, “Nolan is starting to process the offense very quickly and it is becoming more and more natural for him. Last week he showed that he is a winner and can get the job done.”

Hirth said he relied heavily on his teammates in the week one win.

Hirth said, “I am very excited to know that I have (running back) Jordan Foster behind me knowing he is a beast and also knowing that I have Bradan McCoy as a wide receiver because they are both two of my key targets.”

The team is hopeful that their offseason training will pay off this season.

Hirth said, “I believe that we will have more wins than last year because we have all been in the weight room putting in work all the time and that our team chemistry is better than before.”
