With the first game only a week away, the boys varsity basketball team is fired up and ready to compete. The Owls enter the year looking to defend their conference title after finishing last season with an impressive 19–7 record.
The team will have big shoes to fill following the graduation of Layton Hollis, who led the Owls in scoring with 19 points per game and earned Conference MVP honors. His departure leaves a noticeable gap, but returning players are eager to step up.
Senior Ethan Shirk said the team is determined to build on last year’s success and create its own identity.
“Last season was a great season, but this year we are going to prove ourselves more and keep working toward better things, including giving it our all no matter what,” Shirk said.
That competitive mindset is shared throughout the roster as players push themselves in preparation for the new year.
For Coach Gilbert, the start of another varsity campaign is about more than strategy and playbooks. It’s about reestablishing intensity, unity and expectations.
“Attitude and effort are the non-negotiables the players have to bring to every practice and game,” Gilbert said.
The Owls return a strong core of hardworking and committed players. Shirk noted that the combination of Xander Smith’s defensive strength and the offensive shooting abilities of himself and Owen Haegele gives the team confidence moving forward.
“With Xander’s defense and with mine and Owen Haegele’s offensive shooting skills, we have an unstoppable mindset prepared for this season,” Shirk said.
Team chemistry has also been a major bright spot during preseason practices. Players have been pushing each other, staying vocal, and keeping communication strong both on and off the court. With returning experience and motivated underclassmen, expectations remain high for another standout season.
Sophomore Jett Black said the energy from the student section fuels the team.
“The energy at the games is an indescribable feeling to be around,” Black said.
Excitement continues to build across the school as the Owls prepare for their first tip-off. Practices have been intentional and focused, giving younger players opportunities to step into bigger roles and prove their readiness.
Coach Gilbert said the team’s leadership is already setting the tone for what he hopes will be another successful season. The Owls begin their season at 7pm on Friday at Herculaneum.
“The team’s leadership is one of the best aspects of our group,” Gilbert said. “The boys really show their love for each other and for this sport. I’m lucky to have a team as coachable as them.”
