Despite graduating the conference player of the year, the Windsor boys basketball team is continuing to find ways to win ballgames.
Even with a last second loss against Seckman on Thursday, the Owls are 10-4 on the season.
According to team leaders, connection is the key factor in their success. Senior captain Xander Smith emphasized that when the team is not connected, performance suffers, but when players work together, they are at their best.
“When we were connected, we were really good,” Smith said. “Friendship is key on the court, and our communication has been great.”
That connection has translated into strong individual performances that benefit the entire team. Colby Blake leads the team as the top scorer at 15.8 points per game, while Ethan Shirk has established himself as the team’s strongest defender. Smith excels in help defense, consistently stepping in to support teammates, and has also emerged as the team’s most effective leader by keeping everyone focused and accountable.
“My leadership is the thing I’m most proud of improving throughout my four years of high school basketball,” Smith said.
Leadership has been a major area of growth this season. One player noted that staying connected on the court is just as important as staying connected off it. Head coach Brian Gilbert echoed that sentiment.
“Our biggest flaw is our leadership and connection, but it’s also our biggest strength,” Gilbert said. “When communication and leadership are at their peak, we play our best. When it’s off, the whole team is affected.”
Another key contributor is senior Owen Haegele, known as the emotional spark of the team. Haegele is described as a player who consistently steps up when needed, bringing energy and encouragement that lifts his teammates during crucial moments.
“He is the tip of the spear,” Gilbert said.
The team’s progress was on full display last Friday in a game against Hillsboro, where they secured a 62–48 victory. The win served as proof that their hard work, communication, and unity are paying off.
“We will keep proving the hard work we’ve put into this over and over again,” Smith said.
